Peer Review

The Open Gender Journal uses a variety of established academic quality assurance mechanisms. Authors, editors, and external reviewers work together to ensure the quality of articles through the peer review process. The form of review varies according to the type of article and can be found in the author guidelines for each section. 

The aim of the journal is to ensure a high level of transparency in the publication process. Authors can track the status of the publication process in the editorial system.

All manuscripts are first reviewed by the editorial team for formal suitability according to defined criteria. This includes the possibility of a plagiarism check.

Double-anonymous review

Contributions to the Research Articles section undergo a double-anonymous peer review process, also known by the ableist term "double-blind", which is now rejected by relevant organizations (see Aides 2020). In this form of review, at least two external reviewers assess the scientific quality of the article. The editorial team is aware of the heterogeneity of knowledge cultures within gender studies and takes this into account when selecting reviewers. The aim is to avoid favoring certain schools of thought and approaches, as well as doing justice to the diverse perspectives in and on the field.

Submitted manuscripts are completely anonymized prior to review, i.e. all references to the identity of the authors are removed. Contacts between researchers, as well as the availability of preprints and other forms of pre-publication, may affect the double-anonymous review process. We ask reviewers to be transparent about conflicts of interest in accordance with our ethical guidelines. The text of reviews will be made available to authors. By mutual agreement, reviewers may also receive the other review.
