Abstract

The "patriarchy of things" paradigm presents a new way of analyzing the potency of gender stereotyping. The anthology "Patrix. Patriarchal Systematics and Their Reification", edited by Tina Hartmann und Elena Köstner, takes up this approach. Using various objects such as translations, schoolbooks, and online literature as examples, the materialization of stereotyped male and female bodies in the design of things is traced. The sense is heightened that design is always political and complicit in discrimination.

Some articles also highlight that women's experiences of discrepancy with the materialization of the idealized masculine demonstrates its patriarchal character and the failure of its all-encompassing claim to effectiveness.
