Abstract

For the exhibition ‘Membran’ at the Kunstverein Bautzen, Leipzig-based sculptor and draughtswoman Agnes Lammert developed a walk-in, space-filling installation. During a two-week working phase, she created a space inspired by the cavities of the inner ear using wax, permeable fleece and a raw outer framework. Its shape was reminiscent of the ‘membranous labyrinth’ – the organ of balance that enables us to perceive movement and space. If this sense is disturbed, it leads to a loss of orientation in humans. Thrown back on one's own physical experience, intimacy and vulnerability become palpable. ‘Membrane’ raises questions about boundaries, fears, health, fragility, and the individual and collective dimensions of physical experiences. Art and media scholar Katrin Köppert gave the opening speech. The article includes installation views, an excerpt from Köppert's opening speech, and drawings from Lammert's series ‘Labyrinth’.
