Sexuality and Mobility – Migrant Women in North-South Relations

The article explores the relationship between sexuality, gender and migration from the perspective of the Global South and thus addresses shortcomings in gender-related migration research. On the basis of research on female Bolivian migrants and Brazilian women active in sex tourism, the article traces the significance of local contexts and North-South relations for migration and life in Europe. Based on the experiences of the interviewees and following body practice approaches, the focus is on how women use body practices and sexualised and exoticised representations specifically for spatial and social mobility. With reference to queer-theoretical and decolonial perspectives, not only the scope for action achieved by the interviewees through mobility strategies is shown, but also the normative significance of racialized and classicist sexuality concepts for the constitution of border regimes and their violent effects.
