Abstract

How can heterosexually defined couple relationships be conducted without (re-)producing the patriarchal binary gender system? To pursue this question, Ann-Madeleine Tietge combines psychoanalytic theories (of subjectivity) with (de-)constructivist approaches in gender studies and renders them empirically productive in the form of a depth-hermeneutic analysis of problem-centered interviews with couples and individual partners. The particular merit of the study is that it identifies unconscious patterns of the interactive production of gender that undermine heteronormative-critical intentions and draws conclusions for everyday practical possibilities and needs for change.
